March 1, 2016FOUNDER'S DAY AT ST MARY'S SEMINARY TODAY
In the wake of the Great Storm of 1900, Bishop Nicholas Gallagher, the Third Bishop of Galveston, founded St. Mary's Seminary in October of 1901 on the banks of Galveston Bay in La Porte, Texas in what had formerly been known as the Sylvan Beach Hotel.
Today, Thursday, February 25, 2016, St. Mary's Seminary celebrates its Annual “Founder's Day,” honoring the memory of Bishop Nicholas Aloysius Gallagher (February 19, 1846 – January 21, 1918) and celebrating the mystery of Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest.
The primary intent of instituting Founder's Day is to provide the students, faculty and staff of St. Mary's Seminary with an occasion to remember our own history in the founding of the seminary - and to recognize that we who live, work, study and minister here are part of a noble institution that dates back more than 110 years. (The reason for celebrating Founder’s Day on a Thursday in late February is that Bishop Gallagher’s birthday is in late February.)
In founding St. Mary's Seminary, Bishop Gallagher desired that the seminary form men as priests according to the heart and mind of Christ, the Eternal High Priest. In this way the particular liturgical expression of Founder's Day at St. Mary's Seminary will celebrate the mystery of Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest.
